CTE Student Code of Conduct
Respect Yourself, Respect Others, and Respect Our School
 
At Chief Tomat Elementary School we maintain a safe, orderly, learning environment where pupils become responsible, considerate, caring and productive citizens.  To help accomplish this we have developed a Code of Conduct that students are expected to follow while at school, while going to and from school, and while attending any school function or activity, at any location that will have impact on the school environment. These expectations also apply to student use of electronic and social media.  Our school's Code of Conduct is supported by a behavior matrix that is displayed prominently in each classroom.  This behaviour matrix provides examples of appropriate student conduct in many of our school's settings.

Chief Tomat Elementary School upholds and promotes the values expressed in the BC Human Rights Code respecting the rights of all individuals in accordance with the law- prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, gender, gender identity and expression - in respect of discriminatory publication and discrimination in accommodation, service and facility in the school environment.
 
 
Student Rights and Responsibilities
 
1. I have a RIGHT to learn at school.
 
It is my RESPONSIBILITY to:
·         listen carefully to instructions,
·         work quietly in my desk,
·         raise my hand if I have a question, concern, or need to leave
 
2. I have a RIGHT to hear and be heard.
 
It is my RESPONSIBILITY to:
·         pay attention to the person who is speaking,
·         take turns when speaking to others,
·         avoid making loud noises that disrupt the learning of others
  
3. I have a RIGHT to be respected in this school.
 
It is my RESPONSIBILITY to:
·         show caring for others,
·         use kind words
·         not tease or bug other people, or hurt their feelings,
·         help take care of our school
 
4. I have a RIGHT to be safe at school and while traveling to and from school.
 
It is my RESPONSIBILITY to:
·         play in a way that I am always in control of my body,
·         keep my hands and feet to myself,
·         not threaten, kick, punch, or physically harm anyone else,
·         report unsafe behaviours to an adult
 
5. I have a RIGHT to privacy and to my own personal space.
 
It is my RESPONSIBILITY to:
·         respect the personal property of others,
·         accept others right to privacy
 
 
School Wide Expectations
 
1. Student Rights and Responsibilities - Students are expected to follow Chief Tomat Elementary School's "Student Rights and Responsibilities" while at school, while going to and from school, and while attending any school function or activity, at any location.  Examples of appropriate behaviour in different school settings is available here.
 
2. Honesty - Students are expected to be honest to themselves and others.  Openness and honesty promotes positive relations with others.  Dishonesty has a negative effect on a student’s reputation and the reputation of the school.  It also infringes on another person’s right to be respected.
 
3. Proper Attire - Students are expected to dress in a manner that is appropriate for school.  In cool or rainy weather, students should come to school prepared to play in the outside temperatures.  Thus, students are expected to:
        Dress appropriately for the weather
        Wear indoor shoes
        Remove hats once inside the building
        Not wear clothing that promotes the use of drugs, alcohol or inappropriate language
        Not wear beach wear (spaghetti-strap halter tops revealing bra straps, short tops that show off the midriffs, shorts that reveal undergarments).
 
4. Student Use of Electronic & Social Media Communication
Responsibilities of the Student
In accessing electronic communications systems and social media applications, it is expected that students will:
1. Sign the Student Network Account and Internet Agreement, on an annual basis, in order to gain access to and use of the district’s electronic communications systems, and understand that compliance is a condition of access.
2. Demonstrate digital citizenship, both during and outside of school hours, by conducting all related activities in a responsible, ethical, legal and respectful manner in accordance with the District and School’s Codes of Conduct and the Student Network Account and Internet Agreement.
3. Practice safe online behaviour and report any inappropriate communication (e.g. distribution of information harmful to others or information regarding a potentially dangerous situation that may threaten the safety of others).
4. Protect access to their individual network accounts by the use of a private, personal password, ensure that their personal password is not shared, and agree not to use the password of any other individual.
5. Respect the privacy of others (e.g. students, staff, parents and community members), including but not limited to, the sharing of photos, videos, and personal information, without informed consent.
6. Ensure that personal use of electronic communications systems neither interferes with, nor distracts from, their learning or the learning of others.

5. Healthy Living – Chief Tomat Elementary School is a registered member of the BC Healthy Schools Fruit & Vegetable Program.  Pop, chips and candy are highly discouraged.


 Behaviour Expectations

Any behavior that interferes with learning, or creates unsafe conditions is considered unacceptable and contravenes the school Code of Conduct.  All students are expected to be responsible for their learning and their behavior - examples of expected behaviour in a variety of school settings is available here.  Reported violations of the Code of Conduct will be dealt with by an adult.

As a child gets older they are held to a higher standard of appropriate behaviour.  Older students are expected to make more responsible choices about their behavior, and to accept the consequences of those choices. 

Consequences:

Disciplinary action is intended to be consistent, preventative and restorative rather than merely punitive. Our goal is teach students why their behaviour is inappropriate and how it affects others.  The range of consequences can vary from problem solving discussions, to formal action plans, to a suspension, depending on the severity and frequency of the behaviour, and the age and maturity of the student.  The school will also inform other agencies, for example the RCMP or Ministry of Children and Families, as necssary.  Special considerations may apply to students with special needs, if they are unable to comply with a Code of Conduct due to having a disability.

Notification:

We feel the school and home can work together in teaching students appropriate behaviour at school.  Thus parents are often notified of misbehaviour at school.  This will be done through a note, an email, or a call home.  Serious infractions of the Code of Conduct may lead to a parent conference with the teacher and/or principal.
