Principal's Message

Welcome to Chief Tomat Elementary School!

We are honoured and grateful to work and learn on the beautiful, traditional and unceded territory of the Sylix (Okanagan) People.  As proud members of West Kelowna and the Westbank First Nations area, we are grateful to serve our amazing and diverse community.

As the proud principal of CTE, I am grateful for the work that our staff does each and every day to support our learners in a positive and growth-oriented way.

Our school moto is, "A community of learners; engaging hearts and growing leaders."

To that end,  CTE will have significant focuses on the following this year:

1.  Applying research-oriented pedagogies that focus on literacy instruction and assessment .  By focusing on improving literacy skills, our learners will experience more connected and powerful learning across all curriculum areas.

2.  Identifying and articulating where students are in their learning and the next steps required for students to reach their full potential.  Staff will be working with students to create clear learning intentions, powerful criteria around meaningful and engaging tasks, collaborative and effective feedback, and growth-based assessment language that will guide student learning.

3. Developing social-emotional learning (SEL) skills in all students to provide them with the competencies and abilities necessary to navigate challenges at school and in life.  This work will be guided by the Seven Grandfather Teachings of Truth, Love, Respect, Courage, Honesty, Humility and Wisdom.

I consider myself very fortunate to have been an educator for around 20 years now, and am a proud graduate of Central Okanagan Public Schools "a few" years ago now!  I have served as a teacher, vice principal and principal in two different districts during my professional career, including stints at Constable Neil Bruce Middle School and Mount Boucherie Secondary, so I believe that I have a good understanding of the broader community here in West Kelowna.  I am the proud husband to an amazing wife who teaches Grade 8, and the proud father to two daughters in Grades 8 and 10 this  year, so education is almost always at the top of mind for me and I am committed to high quality opportunities for all students.

As a school leader, I believe in the power of strong relationships between all stakeholders in the school community - students, staff and parents/guardians.  I welcome conversations about teaching and learning and am fortunate to work alongside our Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) to help support the great work that is done at CTE to provide a rich learning experience for each of our learners.  Should you have any questions, please reach out to your child's teacher or to me to discuss.

I look forward to working alongside the CTE community again this year in support of our most valuable asset... our children!

Mr. Ryan Ward
